A luxurious townhouse from a century ago enchants – as is typical in Hungary’s capital – with its refined façade. The owners of this apartment, however, were primarily tempted by the view of the Danube, which can be admired from the expansive rooftop terraces. That was the main reason they decided to purchase the penthouse apartment. They dreamed of giving their home an Art Deco character.
Introducing such a distinctive style into an interior with pronounced sloping ceilings was a challenge. We therefore proposed a carefully curated eclectic design. Accents from the world of Art Deco and Bauhaus intertwine here with top-tier contemporary European craftsmanship. A counterpoint to all these reinterpretations of the past is wood with visible knots – a material truly appreciated only in our own era.
In the living room, the luxury of Art Deco is echoed by the spherical forms of lampshades, brass details, glossy burr veneer, and the fanciful decorations of glass cabinet fronts. The spirit of Bauhaus and Mies van der Rohe’s architecture, on the other hand, is reflected in the modern walnut built-ins and dining furniture.
In the bedroom, Art Deco inspiration is conveyed through fabrics in shades of brown and gold (including on the stylized screen behind the bed) as well as the characteristic forms of the bedside tables. In the adjoining bathroom, we turned to the magnificent Emperador marble – fashionable in the interwar period – accompanied by contemporary brass-toned fittings. A crystal mirror and a vanity console with an open shelf draw on tradition, but in a relaxed, modern way.
