A Jewel-Box Story. A Small Apartment in a Historic Tenement in Łódź

Łódź, ul. Nawrot, Śródmieście. 34sqm
The townhouse, dating back to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, underwent revitalization with its façades and staircases carefully restored. The newly divided apartments, however, were left for individual renovation. Given the prestigious context, despite the modest size of just 34 square meters, the decision was made to use only noble materials. Window sills, countertops, and wall claddings were crafted from several types of marble, the floors from oak stained on site, and the moldings from traditionally modeled plaster. Bespoke details included an upholstered bed headboard and custom lamp shades. With this eclectic interior design, we wanted to evoke the spirit of transformation from the times of The Promised Land to the present day.

From a functional perspective, the biggest challenge was creating a bathroom. Its location was dictated by the existing plumbing stack running through the living room wall. To avoid disturbing the proportions of the 3.5-meter-high space and the rhythm of its neo-Baroque coving, we decided to conceal the bathroom within a mirrored cuboid. Its reflections visually enlarge the living room and brighten the kitchen. What’s more, the same structure houses a wardrobe, utility closet, and washing machine, discreetly integrated into the wall opposite the entrance door.

The apartment in Łódź hides several surprises. The greatest is the bedroom, accessible through a concealed doorway in the stuccoed wall of the living room—just like in French palaces. Other individual touches include glossy black tiles with an irregular surface framing the entrance door and the passage to the bedroom. Behind the kitchen cabinets, veneered in a burl-like pattern, lies a flash of fiery red. Finally, vintage brass chandeliers and sconces from a long-gathered collection add a distinctive character to the interior.
